I have lived through a time when one could not be openly bisexual or gay… when code phrases like, ‘I’m a friend of Dorothy’ had to be used by a gay person to communicate their needs to others of similar mind… and I have lived through four years in the US Army, and actively participated in the various civil rights and anti-war movements of the 60’s and 70’s… and the booms and busts of the 80’s and 90’s… and the current millennia boom and bust…
…and I am amazed that in many ways we haven’t progressed much farther than the 1950’s… here we are in the 21st century and still rehashing the same old… shit… about fucking words.
Words are just words… and the only problem with them… is the individual’s attitude towards them… I have found, ‘impartial’… to be an effective and much more positive attitude… about many things.
While technically brilliant… emotionally our culture has become more and more shallow as we lose touch with nature and even ourselves…
Most are unable to entertain themselves anymore… and they sit in front of their plasma screen and are fed by the cable/dish VCR/Disc Devo and/or various other electronic apparatus… like a constant drip syringe injection of their opiate… entertainment.
Without it… they’re bored and then they get angry… interrupt someone’s favorite program and you usually will get hostile… perhaps even crazy ‘junkie’ like responses… and these are law abiding citizens… who know their rights… they watch the cop shows… and they know what’s going on… and everything fits… in the ‘right’ program…
That’s the problem… the media has you programmed… They loved it when Lenny Bruce talked dirty and was funny about it… but when he stepped out of the ‘program’ and wanted to talk about his court case and the importance of the 1st Amendment… the fans dumped him… and left him on his own to hassle with the courts and the police harassment… which then spiraled into more frustrations, depression, drug abuse, and finally a tragic drug over dose death.
John Mayer is great guitarist and entertainer… but if he steps out of the ‘program’ …and publicly says dirty words about his ex-girlfriend and other ladies …the media circus and tabloid sharks go after the high ratings and profitable circulation… as one media executive said about the breaking Tiger Woods scandal, “…this is even better than Michael Jackson dying.”
If Jay Leno steps into any other time slot other than the 11:35 PM Tonight Show ‘program’… you dump him… he flops…
As long as the Icons entertain you and push your laugh buttons and turn your gah, gah dials …and they stay within the ‘program’ you have about them …you reward them with riches, fame, and status …but the first time they show themselves to be ordinary humans who simply have a “good act” going… by simply stepping out of the ‘act’ and being human for a moment… thump… you dump them for the next flashy silly act…
We have all peed in the pool at one time or another… and one might say… John Mayer simply did it from the diving board.
John, if by some miraculous synchronicity you read any of this… a possible shaman/astrology antidote to all this anguish would be to put all the energy of the frustration, hurt, and anger… into the art… the inspiration side… the music… say it with music… and in the future, it might be better to say things like, “…I have no comment… I just play my guitar…” …and just be you, the great musician you are…
